The Auto Rollcall

Well, here it is, my Auto Rollcall. I think this started in the mid 1980's when a bunch of us, (Rod, Tim, Big Eric, Nick & others), were sitting around the wood stove on a sub zero night in the garage/shop at my parents house. (I was probably working on a Jeep) We were talking about the various cars we had owned - I started a list on an old blackboard that was nailed to the back of the door from the garage into my folk's house. After that I would add to it periodically as cars came and went in my life. It only recently came over to our house and needs to be updated (it ends in 1994 - the year I got my own house with a garage)

Farther down the page is a more legible version that should be current but I'm not 100% sure everything is here!

1980	1977	MGB	Roadster	2	Purchased with a friend who was short on $$ (he later paid me back for this looser) Slow, rusty, poorly made.
1981	1971	Jeep	Wagoneer	3	Purchased from Mike Bernstien's dad. The beginning of my dislike for Jeeps. Needed a new driveshaft every 3 months....
1983	1970	Volvo	145	3	Purchased to replace the Jeep. Why I LOVE Volvo's - 100,000 mi of good road in the 5 years I owned it. Great college car - long highway drives were tough with no O/D. See photo at bottom of this page or in Volvo Corner.

1984	1965	Ford	Fairlaine	3	Purchased for $150 for a friend who was low on cash - he repaid me 2 weeks later.
1985	1948	DeSoto	S-11 Sedan	3	My first (really) old car! Repainted by my college friend Steve. Drove well but the Fluid Drive was a pain. Plus, as a Florida car, it had no heat; tough when it got up to CT. Sold in 1992.

1986	1966	Lincoln	Continental Coupe	5	A trip to the lumberyard in the Continental and, out of nowhere, a fellow asks me if I want a coupe for parts! See photo below.
1986	1978	Buick	Skylark Wagon	3	Given to me not running by a friend of my dad's. (his mechanic gave up) Fixed and given to college friend Steve.
1987	1978	BMW	530i	2	Neighbor's divorce nets me her car from him for $1,000. Very sweet ride but scary fast. Sold before I lost my license.
1987	1962	Studebaker	Lark Sedan	1	Despite being pink it was mint!! Loaned to a friend who drives it off the road into a tree one night. Sad end to a show winner.... I think I still have a hubcap somewhere.
1987	1955	DeSoto	Firedome Coupe	2	Purchased from 98 year old original owner - it needed a new home and I couldn't resist. Much better car than the '48. I sold this car in 2004 and miss it very much.
1987	1946	Willy's Jeep	CJ-2A	4-5	Hauled out of a barn slated for demolition - should have left it! Spent 3 years and lots of $$$ but never got it to run right. When it did, it would go anywhere.. slowly. Did I mention I don't have good luck with Jeeps?! See photo below.
1987	1978	Pontiac	Bucephalus (Bonneville)	2	Replaced the BMW - from a family friend for $500. Ran great, big & comfy, the lowest cost/mile ratio of any car I've had. The beginning of my love for GM cars. Sold in 1989.
1988	1980	Volkswagen	Rabbit Diesel	2	Wouldn't run, bought for $100. Fixed the glow plug fuse and it ran like a champ. Resold.
1988	1944	Ford Jeep	MB	5	Parts Jeep for CJ project - FYI, Ford parts are different! Duh!!
1988	1983	Audi	5000 TD	1	Given to me as payment for $900 work on a customer's boat - dead in NH. Towed home with borrowed Suburban. Next day owner realizes what the cars worth - buys it back for $1400!!
1988	1978	Chevrolet	Suburban 4x4	2	Went to get the Audi (above) & purchased with Audi's proceeds, another divorce car. Swapped to my brother.
1989	1972	Volvo	1800-E	2	Sold the Pontiac to buy the sexiest Volvo ever made. Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection was very troublesome. Sold in 1994
1989	1983	Jeep	Wagoneer	1 or 5 depending ....	Given to me by my parents friends. Nice looking but the nail in the coffin for Jeep's and me. Sold to a repo man - he deserved it!
1989	1968	Volvo	P-1800	4-5	Purchased as a parts car but too nice to disassemble. Sold to another friend who is restoring it.
1989	1984	Chevrolet	Caprice Estate	1	Swapped for the Suburban - wonderful car but don't ever get glow stick juice on vinyl upholstery! Met a bittersweet end.
1990	1980	Volvo	245	2	Replacement for the Caprice. The second lowest cost/mile car I ever had - in 3 years I logged 150,000 miles! Sold in '93
1991	1950	GMC	3/4 ton truck	4	Purchased after I finally gave up on the CJ-2A. Great looks and the brawn for any job. Sold in '96 when I lost storage.
1992	1981	Volvo	244	2	Gift but DOA - fixed and resold
1993	1988	Volvo	745 GLT	1	Newest (at the time) & most expensive car I ever purchased.
1994	1984	Audi	5000	2	Gift from mom's neighbor. Millions of little (EXPENSIVE) problems. Resold - no profit after repairs. IMHO a terrible car
1994	1979	Chevrolet	Impala	2	Purchased from friend's grandmother's estate for aforementioned friend Steve. Navy blue and super sharp!
1995	1978	Alfa Romeo	Spyder 2000	2	Really Abby's - a great car and very well engineered but very poorly assembled. Spica fuel injection was terrible. It made me very sad to sell this little car a few years ago.
1998	1988	Chevrolet	K-2500 Truck	3	Great work horse. Simplest fuel injection system ever!

2007	2003	Volvo	V-70	1	(Wife's car...) Front wheel drive, 5-cyl and 3 fuse boxes. Miserable to work on - what's up with the crappy canister oil filter and belly pan? 25 minutes to change the oil, I can do the 240 in 5 minutes. FORD YOU STINK AND SO DID THIS CAR!!
2009	1992	Volvo	240	3	A long-time friend's car purchased by another friend and then onto us. Speedy it ain't! But you can't beat the simple, reliable and tough 240. I'm empowered by being able to do virtually all the work on it myself. A Ford Falcon with ABS and air bags!
2010	1996	Chevrolet	K-1500 Silverado	2	The time came to replace the old red K-2500 with a roomier truck the whole family could go in. I'll miss the simplicity of the old one, vortec, power windows and all the options on this new Silverado are just toys that'll break... But if it is 1/2 as good as the old 2500, it will be a fine vehicle.
2012	2012	Honda	Accord	1	(Wife's car) Got fed up with the V-70 and traded it. Honda is the new Volvo: reliable, safe, holds its value, easy to work on. (Not that it ever needs to be worked on...)
