Tomos
Tomos
outboards were built in Yugoslavia, I believe they were manufactured
from the 1960's up to the early 1990's. The terrible civil war Yugoslavia
went through in the 1990's forced the company to end outboard production.
While not exactly antiques, Tomos outboards interest me since they
also made mopeds.
In
the late 1980's Tomos exported a fair number of these motors worldwide.
While the overall design was not bad (at least on the outboards
I have seen), many of the individual parts were of dubious quality.
And speaking of parts, they were scarce when the outboards were
new - today they are completely unobtainable!
(So
please DO NOT write me asking about
where to find parts!!)
If
you own a Tomos outboard and it doesn't work, you have two choices:
1)
Make your own part or find a similar part off another device to
take its place.
2) Find another broken Tomos outboard and hope the parts you need
are still operable.
UPDATE!!
A
viewer of this site in Germany sent me a link for Tomos parts. I
can not comment one way or another on this but here it is if you
are game: Tomos
Germany <----- Thanks Wolfgang!
The
Tomos Travler outboard I have is like new because it has seen very
little use. The magneto died when it was almost new in 1989 and
the (Tomos) dealer was unable to get a replacement coil. It sat
on his rack until I picked it up, he was overjoyed to get $25 for
it rather than toss it! To get it to run I was forced to bodge a
magneto together from old Puch moped parts.

Comments:
This little motor is air cooled, runs quite well and is remarkably
smooth and quiet for a single. Quality and reliability remain
questionable. (FYI, the gold decal was originally red but
faded despite being stored indoors!) And the name Travler
above is not a typo on my part - it is the name on the motor!
